If you’re planning a trip to the Hoover Dam, don’t just limit yourself to the dam itself. The surrounding area has plenty to offer, from hiking and biking to museums and historical landmarks. Here are some things to do in the area:
Visit Lake Mead:
Just a few miles from the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead offers opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming. You can rent a boat or a jet ski, or just relax on the beach.
Hike or bike the River Mountains Loop Trail:
This 34-mile trail loops around the River Mountains, providing stunning views of Lake Mead, the Hoover Dam, and the surrounding desert. You can hike or bike a portion of the trail, or do the entire loop.
Explore the Historic Railroad Trail:
This 3.7-mile trail follows the route of the old railroad that was used to build the Hoover Dam. Along the way, you’ll pass through tunnels and over old railroad bridges, and see views of Lake Mead.
Visit the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum:
This museum tells the story of the construction of the Hoover Dam and the town that was built to house the workers. Exhibits include photos, artifacts, and interactive displays.
Take a helicopter tour:
If you want to see the Hoover Dam from a different perspective, consider taking a helicopter tour. You’ll get a bird’s-eye view of the dam, Lake Mead, and the surrounding desert.
Go on a desert safari:
You can explore the desert around the Hoover Dam on a guided jeep or ATV tour. You’ll see wildlife, cactus gardens, and maybe even some Native American petroglyphs.
Visit the Clark County Heritage Museum:
This museum, located in nearby Henderson, tells the story of Southern Nevada from prehistoric times to the present day. Exhibits include a ghost town, a collection of vintage cars, and a recreation of a pioneer village.
See the Ethel M Chocolate Factory and Botanical Cactus Garden:
Just a short drive from the Hoover Dam, this attraction offers a tour of a chocolate factory and a stroll through a beautiful cactus garden.
Take a day trip to the Grand Canyon:
If you have a full day to spare, consider taking a trip to the Grand Canyon. It’s about a four-hour drive from the Hoover Dam, but the breathtaking views are worth it.
Visit the Arizona Hot Springs:
These hot springs, located on the Arizona side of the Colorado River, are a popular spot for hiking and soaking in the warm water.
