Location
Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia, located in the southern part of the Indochina Peninsula. It is bordered to the west and north by Thailand, to the east by Vietnam and to the south by the Gulf of Thailand. Its capital is Phnom Penh and its most important cities are Siem Reap, Battambang and Sihanoukville. The geographical location of Cambodia is between 10 and 15 degrees north latitude and between 102 and 108 degrees east longitude.
Currency
The official currency of Cambodia is the Cambodian Riel (KHR). However, the US dollar is also widely used in the country, especially in higher value transactions and in the tourism sector.
The Cambodian riel is divided into 100 sen, but due to inflation and lack of confidence in the currency, sen are not currently used in practice. Riel coins exist, but are uncommon and rarely used.
Cambodian riel banknotes in circulation have denominations of 50, 100, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 riel. The banknotes feature images of historical monuments and Cambodian personalities.
It is important to note that in Cambodia it is common for prices to be quoted in US dollars and Cambodian riels, so it is important to be familiar with both currencies when visiting the country.
Languages
The official and most spoken language in Cambodia is Khmer (also known as Khmer). Khmer is spoken by more than 95% of the Cambodian population and is used in education, business and public administration. In addition to Khmer, other minority languages are also spoken in Cambodia, such as Vietnamese, Chinese, Cham, and French (due to French colonial influence in the past).
Khmer is a tonal language, meaning that the tone of a word can change its meaning. The Khmer alphabet is made up of 33 consonants, 23 vowels and 12 digits, and is written from left to right. The Khmer language is very important to Cambodia’s cultural identity, and is also spoken in parts of Thailand and Vietnam.
Climate 🌡
Cambodia’s climate is tropical, hot and humid all year round, with two distinct seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season, which is the best time to visit Cambodia, runs from November to April, while the rainy season runs from May to October.
During the dry season, the weather is hot and dry, with temperatures ranging between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius. Temperatures are cooler in the northern and northeastern mountainous regions of Cambodia. Rainfall is scarce during this season and the sky is usually clear.
The rainy season is wetter and hotter, with temperatures ranging between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. Rains are more frequent in the south and coastal regions of Cambodia, while in the north the rains are less intense. The rains can cause flooding and travel difficulties in some areas of the country.
If you are planning to visit Cambodia, the best time to do so is during the dry season, when weather conditions are most favorable. However, if you prefer to avoid the tourist crowds, the rainy season can be a good option. Be sure to bring light, comfortable clothing, as well as sun protection and insect repellent, regardless of the season you travel.
