Bhutan Transportation Guide – International Airports
Bhutan has only one international airport, called Paro International Airport. It is located in the city of Paro, about 6 km from the city center, and is the only airport that offers international flights to the country.
The airport is operated by Bhutan’s national airline, Drukair, and offers direct flights to Bangkok (Thailand), Delhi (India), Kolkata (India), Bagdogra (India), Guwahati (India), Kathmandu (Nepal) and Singapore. However, flights to Paro are often subject to cancellations and delays due to weather and topographical conditions in the region.
In addition to Paro International Airport, Bhutan has a domestic airport in the city of Yongphulla in the east of the country, which offers flights to other cities in Bhutan.
National Airports
Bhutan has two national airports that connect to the country’s cities. The airports are the following:
Paro National Airport: Located in the city of Paro, it is the largest airport in Bhutan and the only international airport in the country. From here, other cities in Bhutan can be accessed by plane or road.
Yongphulla National Airport: Located in the city of Trashigang, eastern Bhutan. This airport offers flights to the cities of Bumthang, Paro and Jakar.
It is important to note that flights in Bhutan may be affected by the weather and geographical conditions of the region, which may result in flight cancellations and delays. Additionally, flights are sometimes suspended during the monsoon season due to poor weather conditions.
Bhutan Transportation Guide – Trains
Currently, there are no trains in Bhutan. The country does not have a railway system due to its mountainous and rugged terrain. Most transportation routes in Bhutan are highways and mountain roads.
However, there are plans to build a railway line connecting Bhutan to India, which is expected to be completed in the next decade. The railway line will run from the Indian city of Kokrajhar to the western Bhutan city of Pasakha and is expected to improve connectivity and trade between the two countries. But for now, the only way to reach Bhutan is through Paro International Airport or by road from India.
Bhutan Transportation Guide – Buses
Buses are a common form of public transportation in Bhutan. Bhutan’s roads are in good condition and there is a bus network connecting the country’s major cities and towns. However, the buses are not always very comfortable and the schedules can be irregular.
Most buses are state-owned and operated by the Bhutan Transport Corporation (BTCL). There are also some private bus companies that offer intercity transportation services. Bus prices vary depending on distance and type of bus. Luxury buses are more expensive than normal buses.
Apart from buses, there are also taxi and car-sharing services that can be used to travel within Bhutan. These services are more expensive than buses, but offer more comfort and flexibility. Taxis and car sharing are a good option for those who want to explore the country in a more personalized way.
